Are you "xenolexic"* ?

This word, and others, can be found in the list of "Unused but Useful: Oxford English Dictionary's Reject List."

Sandra Yeyati shared an interesting article that includes this note:

Oxford University holds 50 large filing cabinets crammed with 1000s of 6 x 4 inch cards detailing every declined entry for the Dictionary.

Of course, now the words are kept on computers.

Dorothy Mills Gets Credit Where Credit Is Due

NPC member Dorothy Mills has had an extended coming-out party, as recently recognized co-author of the Oxford University Press monumental 3-volume history of baseball attributed to her late husband, Harold Seymour. Today's New York Times article picks up the news.

Anna Hsu, owner of AZN Asian Fusion restaurant, is pleased to host the Naples Press Club on Thursday, August 26 from 5:30 to 7 pm.

Happy Birthday, Olga!!!

April 26th was Olga Hirshhorn's 90th Birthday. She's been a Press Club member for a long time, and is on the board of the Friends of Art, for the Naples Museum of Art. Actually, she was one of the founders of Friends of Art in 1984, even before the Philharmonic Center for the Arts opened in 1989. Her deceased husband is the founder of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C.

Olga attended one of our recent luncheons and it was obvious she still has a feisty side, based on her discussion about her difficulties with Comcast. Although she is not into e-mail (yet), birthday cards can be sent to her at "Sweet Spot Cottage", 170 Shell Alley, Naples, FL, 343102-7525 .

Meet Julia Barnett, NPC 2009 Scholarship Winner

Meet Julia Barnett, from Marco Island, a graduate of Lely High School, and one of Naples Press Club’s two 2009 Scholarship Winners.

Julia chose to go further away to school than many Florida students. She chose to attend Colorado State University-Pueblo because she loves the state and has family there.

Julia is a Mass Communications Major, with a focus in Journalism. She has a double-minor, in Art, with a focus in Photography, and in Italian. Her NPC “mentor” is Connie Kindsvater, who received a degree from Colorado State University (a while ago). [More]]]>

Authors Praise 8th Annual A & B Festival

The Book Fair aspect of the 2010 "Naples Authors and Books Festival" initiated a new concept:authors exhibiting in shops and restaurants along 5th Avenue South. Approximately 50 authors exhibited, hosted by two dozen business establishments. As is always the case, feedback is mixed. While some felt that there was not enough traffic or that signage was needed to direct people to participating merchants, others were very pleased with how things went. [More]]]>
