What do we know about the famous book “The Wizard of Oz”?

Is it fiction or allegory; a religious statement or a story book: an idea of the author Frank Baum or the ideologies of his Mother-in-Law, Matilda Joslyn Gage?

These and many other questions about this beloved book, published in 1900 and continuing to be a popular story and movie, will be answered at the NPC May luncheon by Andrew Joppa, a scholar who has spent most of his adult life studying what he calls the “Mother of Oz.”

Important News

Some changes are afoot for the upcoming issues of “SCOOP”.

Thanxx to the generous offers of help from Brooke Mundy, Sandy Reed and Carole Greene, more bylines and tech help will be part of the new line–up. Jim Brandetsas has also volunteered to do cartoons.

We are looking for photographers to record our luncheons and mixers.

SCOOP is initiating a new column: ‘Spotlight on Members.” Suggestions for member profiles are welcome.

An invitation is extended to any and all members who have information to contribute. Articles or tidbits for “Inside Scoop” about member’s activities are important, as more and pertinent content is our goal.

A new deadline has been established: the 15th of the month previous to publication and information should be e-mailed to npcscoop@aol.com.

Carole Greene has every right to be proud.

Not only is she a founding member of the Naples Press Club, but she has written over 1,000 articles for a range of well-known local, regional, and national magazines. With an entire income built upon her free-lancing success, Carole has not only left her mark in the journalism world: She has helped define it.

Born in Anderson, Indiana, she began her journalism career as a humor columnist for the town’s local newspaper. With some of her editorials broadcasted on television, she migrated to Florida in hopes of establishing a career in free-lancing. And established she did.

Our New Scholarship Students

Lauren Schoepfer and Eric Crum

Lauren Schoepfer and Eric Crum were introduced to the Naples Press Club members at the April 26th luncheon meeting.

Both students will graduate from Barron Collier High School this spring and have been awarded the 2012-13 Naples Press Club $1,000 Terrance J. Miller Scholarships.

Lauren will attend Emerson College in Boston, and Eric will attend Florida Gulf Coast University. Both students plan to study Journalism.

Journalists see 320 Percent Increase in Facebook Subscribers

A Facebook analysis studying journalists' use of the subscribe feature finds that the group has experienced a 320 percent average increase in subscribers since November. However, this feature only became available in September, and this analysis is only based on 25 media profiles.

Inside Facebook: Facebook's heavy push of the subscribe feature has apparently paid off, as thousands of journalists enabled subscribers after its launch in September, according to a note on the Journalists + Facebook page.

Book Battle

Is reading going digital?

According to an article in the recent Natural Awakenings Magazine, the number of Americans that prefer to read a book via an electronic reading device tripled in less than 12 months last year, but most still prefer to read a traditional, physical book. A survey of 1,000 American adults nationwide shows that 27 percent have now used a Kindle or similar product.

Our April luncheon speaker, Naples own Lyle Bultman, is an expert on Asian countries and culture.

Based on his extensive Asian experiences, he will be discussing “The Muzzled Press of China.”

Living, working or traveling in every Asian country, from Korea to Australia, with the only exceptions being Bangladesh and Laos, has provided Bultman with massive opportunities to become involved in the concepts, practices and principles associated with globalized trade, culture and lifestyles.

Locally, Bultman lectures for the Florida Gulf Coast University Renaissance Academy on various subjects related to China and other Asian countries.

A Clan Meeting

Maire Peters, NPC’s own Irish expert, and creator of Ireland’s longest running TV shows in the Irish language, will host the first "Clans of Ireland USA" Dinner Party in Naples.

An international journalist and publicist, who has met many famous and interesting people, she is offering instructions on “Things Irish” including how to properly make an Irish Coffee!

To respond to the dinner at Noodles Restaurant, Monday April 16th at 6:30 - call Noodles 239-592-0500.

Cost is $26.50 for the dinner and seminar.

The Ides of March have gone by, March Madness too, and of course St.Patrick’s Day.

It’s time for April Fool’s Day, Spring/Summer, the fast paced end of “season” and the slowing down of traffic jams in our town.

Myra Jacob Daniels proved to be a very engaging speaker at the March Luncheon reminiscing a lot about her childhood and her grandmother’s influence on her.

A couple of “bon mots” and her advice from a long business career: “I’ve always loved the idea of being different – never worried about being male or female, just wanted to be professional.”

“You can not start a project without a good creative rationale on paper.”’

Thomas Tyrrell to Address February Luncheon

Thomas Tyrrell is making his second appearance before our group. Last February, the retired international lawyer and geneaologist talked about “A View from Over There”. This time his topic will be ”An Arab Spring One Year Later” and “The British Tabloid Scandal.”

In 1999, Tyrrell cofounded with others in Europe and America an international trust company in Auckland, New Zealand, of which he remains a Director. His earlier background includes membership in the International Bar Association, Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners of London and an International Director of the Association of Professional Genealoogists. For ten years he worked for an International Merchant Bank in London and then for the British Government as an Advisor in the National Economic Development Office. He has homes in the Isle of Man and in Naples since 1987.

Where Will All the J Students Go?

In an earlier blog in SCOOP, we learned that nearly 1 in 3 newsroom jobs have been eliminated since the number of journalists peaked at 56,900 in 1989, according to an annual survey by the American Society of News Editors.

At the end of 2010, only 41,600 scribes were left on the industry’s payrolls", states Alan D. Mutter in his "Reflections of a Newsosaur".

Belated Happy New Year and Happy Chinese New Year. The Year of the Dragon, hopefully, will bring many new, exciting and maybe "fire-breathing" events for the NPC Catching up on member news:

One of our newer members (2011) Jeff Bruce is now the Managing Editor of the NDN! Congrats to Jeff!! In his new job, he will have a nurturing role, working with staff to help produce the best investigative and enterprise stories that can't be found anywhere else (according to Phil Lewis). In the article (on p. 1 of today's paper) it states that Bruce was hired in 2011 by the NDN after a national search; he's a former editor of the Dayton (OH) Daily News, a managing editor for the Austin (TX) American-Statesman, and editor-in-chief for Cox Ohio Publishing. Earlier in his career, he had various reporting and editing jobs with the Miami Herald, the Palm Beach Post, the St. Petersburg Times and the Tampa Times. He has also been a member of two Pulitzer Prize juries and a judge for national journalism, writing and photography awards. Currently, he is a journalist in residence at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and has traveled back and forth from Naples to teach Mass Media Writing, Editing, and Feature Writing. From now on, he will teach an online course and does not plan to commute.

The NDN also announced that Phil Lewis (also one of our members), now the Executive Editor and Vice President, will continue to be responsible for newsroom operations, including the editorial and opinion pages, and will continue to head up the editorial board and will resume a weekly column.

Our honoree, Lt. Col. Francis J. “Bing” West, is a U.S. Marine combat veteran. Having led over 100 combat patrols in Vietnam, he was inspired to write The Village, a classic story about counterinsurgency and on the required reading list of Commandants for 40 years. The Marine Corps called upon Col. West to write their training manual Small Unit Action in Vietnam. Later, as Assistant Secretary of Defense, he dealt with insurgencies in El Salvador during the Regan administration.
