Neologisms: Enter the Contest -- Again

Where are all you contest junkies out there?

The neologism contest is falling on its face (doing a facefall)? Desperately need new entries this month to resurrect it.

Since the prize will be something based on the winning word —Carole Green might win with:

FROILANE: "the strip of oil running down any lane on a freeway”, and her prize would be motor oil, although she might prefer the alternate prize of an orange barrel.

Or, I could win, even though I am disqualified, with CHEVROLATTE: and my prize could be a Chevrolet soaked in latte.

Take a chance. Dream up a brand new word with “million dollars” in it.

Out with the Reporter's Notebooks and Stick Papermate Pens...

In with laptops, texting, Twitter, video cameras, tripods...

It was an uplifting and impressive story FGCU journalism students, Alex Pena and Maryann Batlle, together with their professor Lyn Millner, told Press Club members at the March luncheon.

Inside Scoop - March 2010

Authors abound in our group and lots of NPC member chimed in this month talking about new books, NY Times interviews, upcoming movies and even finished road projects.

Board secretary Sandy Lender spent a very profitable weekend in Pensacola. She pitched a novel to an editor at Kensington who requested the full manuscript; and also pitched a Young Adult sci-fi/fantasy novel to a NY agent who requested the first 30 pages and full synopsis.

Donna Jane Mills is still whirling. Since her NY Times story appeared on March 7th she has been interviewed by newspapers in St. Petersburg and Fort Myers. And, she just had a book review published in the February issue of the New York Journal of Books. The book “Red Legs and Black Sox” by Susan Dellinger, of Tampa, is being considered for a movie. Donna says “I need some time-out so I can get back to work on my next book.”

A Great Big Thank You - by Mike Trephan

To all those that attended the "Honor the Free Press" day event.

One of the nice things about heading up a program is the support of the membership in making it a success. For those that attended this event, you already know that it was a sell out, but what you don't is that we had to turn another 75 away. It is not just that we had a good honoree, but also that you all got the word around.

CONTEST...Neologisms

The Washington Post can do it, why not the Naples Press Club? Hereby announcing a contest for clever "Neologisms".  Prize to be announced - and it may be an actual entry, so be very careful.

Neologism according to the dictionary has two meanings:

1) a new word, meaning, usage, or phrase

2) in Psychiatry - a new word often consisting of a combination of other words, that is understood only by the speaker, occurring most often in the speech of schizophrenics.

Tweetup, Retweet, Mistweet

There was a whole lot of “Tweeting” going on at the recent NPC luncheon featuring Chris Silk. Member interest in social media communication was very apparent in the active question and answer period. Silk, social media editor for the Naples Daily News, treated the crowd  to a “Day in the life of a Social Media Journalist ", with a brief introduction to the tools the newspaper uses to stay connected to the community in the shifting media landscape.

Introducing our New President

She needs no introduction to the Naples community, but she is new at the helm of the Naples Press Club.

Donna Fiala and I have something in common. We were both born on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio! However, she has lived in Naples since 1974 and is much respected as our County Commissioner since 2000.

Behind the Scenes at the Naples News Media Group

I’ve been checking out that huge, new, odd looking building on Immokalee Road for  a year now, and finally had  a chance to peek inside at a recent open house. Some information from a hand-out and personal observation:

Recap: Take me out to the Ball Game Luncheon

Although the Cubs didn't show in Naples, we had a great time at the "Take me out to the Ball Game" luncheon last month.

Paul Wachsmith hit a home run lining up Gary Price and Dave Moulton to give us the "inside story' on this timely spring  issue and Dave even gave us his prediction  --the Cubs would stay in Mesa--which proved to be accurate.

The wait staff got into the act with appropos t-shirts and baseball caps and the hot dogs tasted just like Wrigley Field specials...
