On and off the Net...

Are you "xenolexic"* ?

This word, and others, can be found in the list of "Unused but Useful: Oxford English Dictionary's Reject List."

Sandra Yeyati  shared an interesting article that includes this note:

Oxford University holds 50 large filing cabinets crammed with 1000s of 6 x 4 inch cards detailing every declined entry for the Dictionary.

Of course, now the words are kept on computers.

*xenolexic: someone who suffers intense confusion when faced with a new word

Ponderisms

Some puns for educated minds:

1. The roundest knight at King Arthur’s round table was Sir Cumference. He acquired his size from too much pi.

2. I thought I saw an eye doctor on an Alaskan island, but it turned out to be an optical Alelutian.

3. She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

4. A rubber band pistol was confiscated from algrebra class, because it was a weapon of math disruption.

5. No matter how much you push the envelope, it’ll still be stationery.

Jottings & Musings from the Naples Writer’s Conference

Words and pix by Denise and Birgit…and additional tweets from Sandy Lender, too.

The tag team of Scoop Editor and Web Goddess spent a weekend of listening and learning at the recent Writer’s Conference at FGCU. It was a knock-down drag-out contest to see whether Reporter’s Notebook and stick pen could best the iPhone Twittering - with coverage and notes. Here’s the result...

Happy Birthday, Olga!!!

April 26th was Olga Hirshhorn's 90th Birthday. She's been a Press Club member for a long time, and is on the board of the Friends of Art, for the Naples Museum of Art. Actually, she was one of the founders of Friends of Art in 1984, even before the Philharmonic Center for the Arts opened in 1989. Her deceased husband is the founder of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C.

Olga attended one of our recent luncheons and it was obvious she still has a feisty side, based on her discussion about her difficulties with Comcast. Although she is not into e-mail (yet), birthday cards can be sent to her at "Sweet Spot Cottage", 170 Shell Alley, Naples, FL, 343102-7525 .

by Connie Kindsvater

Meet Julia Barnett, from Marco Island, a graduate of Lely High School, and one of Naples Press Club’s two 2009 Scholarship Winners.

Julia chose to go further away to school than many Florida students. She chose to attend Colorado State University-Pueblo because she loves the state and has family there.

Julia is a Mass Communications Major, with a focus in Journalism. She has a double-minor, in Art, with a focus in Photography, and in Italian.  Her NPC “mentor” is Connie Kindsvater, who received a degree from Colorado State University (a while ago).

Authors Praise 8th Annual A & B Festival

by Phil Jason

The Book Fair aspect of the 2010 "Naples Authors and Books Festival" initiated a new concept:authors exhibiting in shops and restaurants along 5th Avenue South. Approximately 50 authors exhibited, hosted by two dozen business establishments. As is always the case, feedback is mixed. While some felt that there was not enough traffic or that signage was needed to direct people to participating merchants, others were very pleased with how things went.

Inside Scoop - April 2010

The Scoopsters have done it again. So much activity going on with NPC members, it’s hard to keep up.

Sandy Lender will get the best birthday present ever. She tells us: “I am stoked beyond words. The August/September issue of “Realms of Fantasy” magazine, which hits the shelves in time for my birthday in June, includes an AMAZING and FABULOUS birthday present for this very happy fantasy author. She goes on to describe the review of her book "Choices Meant for Kings”:

“This is an awesome review that should attract attention in the fantasy genre’s foremost publication. I’m overwhelmed!” Congratulations Sandy and happy almost-birthday…

May 27th Luncheon - Future for TV Viewing

Future for TV viewing: Thousands of channels?

Cable vs. Direct TV vs. HiDef vs. Fiber Optic?

All of the above, some of the above?

With the Federal deregulation of the telecommunications industry there is an emergence of effective competition to rising cable prices. More open access to potential competition for cable providers is now being discussed by many condominium associations locally.
