Inside Scoop - May 2010
Welcome to the fourteen new members who have joined the Naples Press Club. Hope to see you all at the upcoming events:
Gary Greenfield, Dee Hallowell, Catherine Hosmer, Chris McClure, Joy McIntyre, Barbara Miller, H. Michael Mogil, Frank Peel, Nancy Poffenberger, Fran Ruh, Jeff Schlesingr, Charles Togias, JoAnn Ward, and Suzi Weinter.
One of the group, Michael Mogil, has created some notoriety, of late with his legal action against the red light cameras. His wife Barbara received a citation for driving through a red light. He argued that the signal’s yellow light timing was shorter than other lights in the county. The county then went to work examining all traffic signals and, through the process, officials decided to revise its standards for yellow light intervals.

Natural Awakenings, a mind-body-spirit magazine established in southwest Florida in 1994, has been quietly growing into a national presence in the arena of naturally healthy living. This Earth-conscious franchise publication celebrated the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 80 community magazines across the United States, as well as in Puerto Rico and Toronto. Two markets publish Spanish editions. All of the magazines print on recycled newsprint with soy-based ink. Many of the Natural Awakenings communities also digitally distribute their local magazine. Their collective readership now exceeds 3 million, and founder and CEO Sharon Bruckman leads the launch of new magazines every year. NPC member Alison Chabonais serves as the national editor. Event Chairman, Paul Wachsmith, back from a memorable trip to the British Isles. The Twine Tour, also called the Magical Movie Tour, was especially interesting to Paul, a serious movie buff. He and his wife attended a James Bond Festival, where about 20 former Bond Girls (now in their 70’s and 80’s ) including Honor Blackman, Maude Adams and Britt Eklund, autographed photos. They met Roger Moore who, at 81, is “still in good shape”; visited old movie sets; had dinner in a haunted house used as the set for a 1963 movie “The Haunting”; visited Pinewood Studios, Britain’s largest studio; and in Wales, at the National Movie Studio viewed “How the West Was Won", one of three prints of this 3 camera Cinerama movie still in existence. ”Lots of great memories”, according to Paul.
Looks like we have a winner by default for the Neologism contest. Carole Green, (sorry we mixed up your name earlier, Carole) the sole entrant, wins with her entry Froilane: the strip of oil running down any lane in a freeway. Where should we deliver the oil Carole?
